Understanding how people relate to fish across Aotearoa

A critical factor in improving the future of freshwater fish populations in Aotearoa is understanding how people value and relate to fish. Our team will investigate how freshwater fish are incorporated in different aspects of New Zealand’s society to:
Understand New Zealanders’ knowledge, experience and attitudes in relation to freshwater fish.
Gain insight into the feedback loop between people and freshwater fish that drive the improvement or degradation of waterway health.
Develop an understanding of the present mātauranga that relates to freshwater fish, mātauranga that has been lost and how new mātauranga is being generated.
Understand New Zealanders’ knowledge, experience and attitudes in relation to freshwater fish.
Learn how people live with ecological change through comparison with other countries, ecosystems, and introduced species.
Fostering cross-cultural understanding and compassion in relation to freshwater fish through audiovisual storytelling.
