What if the structures we build to protect our waterways could also help restore freshwater biodiversity?
A new Fish Futures report by Ian Kusabs, Robin Holmes and Kati Doehring explores how lakeshore walls, boat ramps, jetties, erosion protection works and stream restoration projects can be designed to create valuable habitat for kōura (freshwater crayfish). The report introduces practical ways to establish and enhance pā kōura – the habitats that kōura need to survive and thrive. By turning science into action, we hope to inspire more projects that support kōura recovery while creating healthier freshwater ecosystems for future generations.
And if you’re not into technical reports, check out our plain-language trifold that translates the science into practical guidance for councils, practitioners, community groups, landowners and restoration projects.
