Fish Futures joins the Science Learning Hub

At Fish Futures, we believe that generating new knowledge is only part of the journey. Ensuring that knowledge is accessible, engaging and useful for future generations is equally important. That’s why we’re excited to announce that Fish Futures is now featured on the Science Learning Hub (SLH) – Pokapū Akoranga Pūtaiao, New Zealand’s leading online science education platform.

The Science Learning Hub is a free, open-access resource funded through New Zealand’s Science in Society initiative and managed by the University of Waikato. Its mission is to connect contemporary science with classrooms, making research relevant and accessible to teachers, students and communities across Aotearoa. The platform has become one of New Zealand’s most successful science communication initiatives, reaching more than 4.48 million users worldwide in one year. These numbers highlight the significant appetite for trusted, accessible science resources and demonstrate the impact that effective knowledge transfer can have far beyond the research sector.

For Fish Futures, being part of the Science Learning Hub reflects a core value of our programme: ensuring that scientific knowledge is not confined to journals and technical reports but is translated into meaningful learning opportunities for young people. Research has the greatest impact when it can inform, inspire and empower the next generation of environmental stewards, scientists and decision-makers.

Fish Futures Science Communicator Kati Doehring, along with the wider Fish Futures team has worked closely with the Science Learning Hub team to develop a suite of educational resources that bring freshwater science and mātauranga Māori together in ways that are engaging and relevant for students. These resources showcase how researchers, iwi, hapū and communities are collaborating to better understand and care for Aotearoa New Zealand’s freshwater ecosystems.

We are proud to see Fish Futures contributing to this important educational platform and helping make freshwater science accessible to students, teachers and communities. By sharing today’s discoveries with tomorrow’s leaders, we can help ensure a just future for both freshwater fish and the people who depend on healthy freshwater ecosystems.
