Fish Futures Science Communicator Kati Doehring and Iwi Advisor Soweeta Fort-D’Ath brought our mahi to an international audience at the International Science Festival in Dunedin, July 2025.
Over two busy days, they spoke with more than 1100 visitors about kōura (freshwater crayfish) — their importance to Te Arawa Iwi, the threats they face from introduced species such as catfish, and how community-led action can help restore and protect these taonga.
Our exhibit featured a pair of live kōura that quickly became crowd favourites, alongside 3D-printed models, a hands-on papercraft activity for tamariki and whānau (which you can find here), and the poster shown below.
