Extreme weather like floods, droughts, and heatwaves is increasing, and it’s putting major pressure on our rivers.
These events can reduce biodiversity, disrupt how ecosystems function, and worsen the effects of other stressors. When multiple extreme events occur back‑to‑back, the impacts on freshwater life can be even more severe.
The authors, including Fish Futures’ Jonathan D. Tonkin and Julian Merder highlight in their latest paper that managing these changes will require catchment‑wide, resilience-focused approaches, along with better long-term monitoring to understand how extreme events interact.
